Door middel van een samenwerkingsverband tussen het Jessa ziekenhuis, het Ziekenhuis Oost-Limburg, de Universiteit Hasselt, en de faculteit Geneeskunde en levenswetenschappen kunnen we binnen LOwLIght hoogstaand, wetenschappelijk onderzoek stimuleren en uitvoeren. Dit alles gekaderd bunnen het Limburg Clinical Research Center (LCRC). Een ervaren en multidisciplinair team van artsen en onderzoekers zal dit onderzoek in de goede banen leiden. Als onderzoeksgroep kunnen we steunen op de faciliteiten van Jessa & Wetenschap en Future Health, platformen die alle medisch-wetenschappelijke activiteiten binnen het Jessa Ziekenhuis en ZOL, respectievelijk, bundelen en klinisch onderzoek begeleiden van begin tot eindfase. Voor statistische ondersteuning kunnen we terugvallen op de diensten van CenStat (UHasselt).
Sinds 2007, voeren we reeds onderzoek uit naar het gebruik van fotobiomodulatie (PBM) therapie voor de preventie en behandeling van orale mucositis en acute radiodermitis. Deze onderzoeken leverden positieve resultaten op die resulteerden in wetenschappelijke publicaties en tevens gelauwerd werden met prijzen op nationale en internationale congressen.
Om op dit elan verder te gaan, willen we het onderzoeksdomein binnen de oncologie verder uitspitten. Hiertoe plannen we nieuwe onderzoeksprojecten waarin we nagaan of PBM kan gebruikt worden voor andere oncologische nevenwerkingen (neuropathie, alopecia, hand-voetsyndroom, lymfoedeem, gynaecologische toxiciteit) . Onze onderzoeksgroep draagt ook bij aan de richtlijnen (2022) omtrent het gebruik van PBM binnen de oncologie in samenwerking met de WALT.
